Jo Stafford, 90, an exceptionally versatile singer who worked with Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey and the Pied Pipers and shared a Grammy Award with her conductor-husband for their parody of a tone-deaf lounge act, died July 16 at her home in Century City, Calif. She had congestive heart failure.

She earned the nickname "G.I. Jo" but jokingly called herself "Miss Outgoing Freight," a War Department euphemism for artillery shells and tanks sent to the front lines.

Jo Stafford Still Stayin' Alive After All These Years

See what happens when you enter a semi-retirement in 1966? People begin to wonder where you are 42 years later. More specifically, if you've still living above ground.

Q: Is Jo Stafford who sang with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra still alive? If so, is there an address at which I can write her? — H.P., Pinehurst

A: Stafford, who’s 90, is in “somewhat declining health,” according to her son, Tim Weston. But she’s comfortable and resting at home, he said in an e-mail. Stafford and the singing group the Pied Pipers, of which she was a member, sang with Dorsey’s orchestra from 1939 to 1942.

In 1977, Stafford and Paul Weston released a cover of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." She has on her own since Weston's death 12 years ago.
