Talkin' Murdoch

Brick Tamland likes to do his killing via the trident to the chest. However, it seems as though the weapon of choice for killing in the Lancaster, California area is an arrow.

Since Rupert Murdoch is against all killings with sharp objects, News Corp failed to distribute Anchorman. This however did not stop him from having a birthday.

Yesterday was somebody's Birthday! Whose Birthday? Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch's Birthday. How Old Is He? 1,2,3,4... 77! And Never been Kissed By... Death

Rupert Murdoch's name appears on "6 Feet Under's" roster

  • Rupert Murdoch has been portrayed by Barry Humphries in the 1991 mini-series Selling Hitler, Ben Mendelsohn in Black and White, Paul Elder in The Late Shift and by himself on The Simpsons.
Jose Canseco and Roger Clemens were also guest stars on The Simpsons. Look at the picture and tell me you aren't as suspicious as I am. His head is huge.

Billy Graham Hasn't Cracked Yet, Here For S'more

There are just certain people that popular newspapers seem to think are dead. And those that people seem to think are dead. The latest example comes from the Washington Post:

A March 9 Magazine article about hospitals in North Korea incorrectly referred to "the late evangelist Billy Graham." Graham, 89, lives near Asheville, N.C.
Maybe the writer confused Billy for his deceased wife Ruth. Because we know for a fact that Billy is alive and preaching. Wichita Eagle 1 Washington Post 0.

Richard Burke Hits the Brakes on His Trek

Richard "Dick" Burke, the founder of best-selling bicycle-maker, Trek Bicycle Corp., has died. Burke died Monday night at a Milwaukee hospital from complications from heart surgery, said his son, John Burke, the company's president. He was 73.

Trek is known among cyclists for making the bikes that Lance Armstrong rode in his Tour de France victories. Those models feature carbon fiber frames and can sell for thousands of dollars. The company — known for brands including Trek, Gary Fisher, Klein and Greg LeMond — sells 1.5 million bikes a year and does $700 million (€455 million) in sales.

"He always wanted to build the best bicycle company in the world and he did it," John Burke said.
Burke had already handed the company over to his son, John, whose training wheels have come off. We're sad to see the old steerer go.

Without further ado, we are proud to bring you the third installment of this heart wrenching series. And now for Part 3, the conclusion of A Very Special JWISA...The Homecoming!

John Wooden, who was on the bubble about where he would be after his hospital season ended, was selected to move on to a rehabilitation center. This year, Wooden, despite many challenges has kept his 97 year living streak active:
"Dad had one of his better days today," his son, Jim Wooden, said in a statement. "He will do exercises two to three times daily. As soon as his strength is back, we will get him home." Wooden said his father wanted to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and the many get-well cards he has received.
No word yet on whether blogs count as "get-well cards" or whether BestDeathPoolEver can be categorized as kind thoughts. We hope so.

Next Week on "John Wooden is Still Alive," with special guest star Britney Spears...
[Cut to Scene] Ohmygod, ya'll... John Wooden is Still Alive!

Esquire Magazine Keeps Heath's Ledger

Margaret B. Jones
Misha Defonseca
Ishmael Beah

What do these people have in common? Well, all three were not drug selling gang soldiers living amongst wolves. But that’s not all. All three are liars, too.

As it turns out, none of these authors did even one of those three. Despite claims to the contrary, Jones did not run drugs for the Bloods of Los Angeles, Defonseca was not rescued from the Holocaust by wolves, nor was Beah actually a child soldier. All three were recently revealed to have lied in their memoirs. And an upcoming piece in Esquire Magazine may be catching up on the fad.

In this month’s Esquire, Lisa Taddeo jots down a controversial fictional diary entry entitled “The Last Days of Heath Ledger.” In the piece, Taddeo conjures up the last few days before Ledger’s surprising death including details of who he spoke with (Jack Nicholson in person, Michelle Williams on email, Mary-Kate Olsen on the phone), what he ate (steak and eggs, banana-nut muffins), where he hung out (The Beatrice), what he wore (a ski mask), and whose music he listened to (Nick Drake).

The penultimate part of the story (as if banana-nut muffins wasn’t epic enough) comes in the last section entitled “The Final Curtain,” where the ventriloquist Taddeo has Ledger explain:

What I'd ask of you, out of respect, not for me--I'm deaf and blind to it now--but for the living I left, is to leave it alone. Don't investigate my last few days, because these could be your last few days. Play your own part. And don't tell me what I did. I didn't play the piano or fuck Lindsay Lohan or fill my goody bag to the brim at the Venice Film Festival. In fact, I'm not really sure I did too much that you personally should remember, beyond make a beautiful little girl, the one thing every guy wants to be able to say he did. So that's it, my final unedited shot: Matilda. She is what lives on. The rest is just bullshit.
Is it ironic for Taddeo to investigate Ledger’s last few days and voice the thought that the rest of us shouldn’t? Well, it depends if you know what irony is. If you do know the definition of irony, then yes- it is ironic.

Why write the controversial piece? Taddeo answers it herself, at the start of the piece:

It becomes theatrically important, after you die, what your last few days are like.
Theatrically important, eh? I wonder if Esquire may have done it because it is financially important, too…I bet there’s more money lying around the Esquire offices for banana-nut muffins nowadays.

For Courtney Love or the Money

Identity theft is nothing to joke about. Millions of Americans are aff...oh, it's Courtney Love making the allegation? It must be the result of some disorder and disarray in Love's head.

Courtney Love is blogging back at skeptics who say her latest fraud allegations are figments of a "bipolar" disorder. The rocker raged when she read Monday that cops are supposedly laughing off the complaint she filed with the LAPD last Wednesday, alleging that she's the victim of an egregious identity theft.

Firing back on MySpace, she vented: "God, people are batsh—. And im not the one who is. and i hear now i am 'Bi Polar' uhhhh...thats more nuts than I will ever be.

"I may be Eccentric, i certainly speak my mind and am slow to put out a record i need to mean the world to ME, and im sure i am quite Nuerotic but 'Bi Polar'. Thats just slander."
We're willing to hear her out. We think everyone deserves that courtesy when it comes to serious allegations like these. Courtney, the floor is yours. Do us proud:
Among the conspirators, the former Hole singer alleges in another e-mail, are two bankers, "queenie guys [who] got on the phone and were hooting and hollering and I was playing along."
Oh. Maybe Courtney should take a look at some of our reading materials...

Wald Wrote "Naked"; No Word if He Wrote Naked

Malvin Wald, a screenwriter who was nominated for an Academy Award for the 1948 movie "The Naked City," has died at 90.

Wald died Thursday at Sherman Oaks Hospital from age-related causes, said his son, Alan. Wald wrote dozens of scripts for motion pictures and TV shows including "Peter Gunn," "Daktari" and "Perry Mason."

"What we see all over our TV screens today originated in large part in that movie," film historian Leonard Maltin told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. "It was a novelty then, deglamorizing Hollywood's depiction of crime-solving, taking it out of the hands of glamorous or exotic private investigators and following the day-to-day, mundane activities of the police."
Yet another person to blame for 60% of the network TV slate consisting of "CSI" and "Law and Order." Though we probably can't pin "Sex and the City" on him.

The $5 Million Dollar Woman

Maybe this is why soap box derbies are really for 14 year olds.

Good thing for Cyd Charisse that by the looks of this picture, she could never fit those legs into a soap box.

Cyd Charisse's name appears on "Remains to be Seen's" roster

  • Charisse is featured in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records under "Most Valuable Legs", since a $5 million insurance policy was accepted on her legs in 1952. She beat the previous record holder, Betty Grable.

Deciphering True From Falsetto in Mozart's Death

Those of us who have seen the Academy award-winning film Amadeus remember one Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During the second half of the movie, we witness the man's failing mental and physical health. As with any story adapted from real-life events, the movie leaves the audience wondering what aspects of the story were factual and what was fictional. Australian composer Gordon Kerry looked for answers.
He began by examining the real circumstances of Mozart's death, and how he came to begin his requiem. The Schaffer version, Kerry says, bears no resemblance to the truth. Far from being destitute, morally corrupt and gravely ill when he was approached by the "dark stranger", Mozart was actually incredibly creative and reasonably prosperous.

"He really was very busy in the last months of his life. He really only fell ill a few weeks before he died. It looks like he had severe renal failure, and that may have given him paranoid delusions. That may be when he started to say 'I'm writing the requiem for my own death'. But it certainly wasn't like that when he began it."

"It's just coincidence that he died in the middle of writing a piece about death - and in circumstances that leant themselves to being mythologised."
We're beginning to wonder whether the Mozart music our mothers played to us while we were fertilizing has actually made any difference in our lives after all.

Jiang Zemin-d Not Where It Once Was

Mr. Jin Zhong, chief-editor of Hong Kong's Open magazine confirmed Jiang Zemin is sick and has lost control over one side of his face. He also suffers from dementia due to Parkinson's, Jin said his information are from reliable sources.

"The Chinese communist regime always hides the illness but not the death. The obituaries are normally made public within one day. They hide details of illness mainly for the purpose of maintaining power. So [these former leaders] are ill, but not necessarily dead, and not necessarily incurable; but it could also be a long-term illness. If a political figure's illness is announced, his opponents are most likely to take advantage of his sickness and give him a fatal blow while he is weak." Jin continued.

'Superhuman' Michael Shows He's the Great DeBakey

Dr. Michael DeBakey is nearing his centenarian status and not letting up. Well, since the surgery a couple years ago that lengthened his life.

"I've made tremendous progress since I was so weak I couldn't get out of bed," he says. "I know I'm not going to be normal at 99, but I'd like to get back to a reasonably normal life. There are things I'd still like to do."

It's a remarkable recovery, even for a man whom friends recall as seeming superhuman in their earliest memories. He is the oldest person not only to survive surgery to repair a tear to the heart's primary artery, the aorta, but also to even undergo such an operation.

In the aftermath, DeBakey says, "I was like tissue."
If he had only spent his days creating the fountain of youth, DeBakey might just live forever.

Margaret Thatcher Gets Medical Check, Please

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is back home, after spending a night in a London hospital for medical checks.

The 82-year-old former Conservative leader wasn't feeling well during dinner with friends near the House of Lords in central London.

The former British leader retired from public life after a stroke in 2002, and has suffered several smaller strokes since then. No details have been released about her latest medical issues.
The Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the supreme legislative body in the United Kingdom and British overseas territories. Thatcher's body, on the other hand, is about as stable as non-fully integrated Wales'.

Going to the Mattresses

If only this man was wearing a seat belt. Lesson learned. When sitting on a mattress in the back of a pick-up truck buckle up-it's the law.

Alan Greenspan and Gabriel García Márquez will be sleeping soundly in their birthday beds tonight. Unless of course a strong wind comes by. Then we'll have to hope they were buckled up.

Today is somebody's Birthday! Whose Birthday? Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank Alan Greenspan's Birthday. How Old Is He? 1,2,3,4... 82! And Never been Kissed By... Death

Alan Greenspan's name appears on "6 Feet Under's" roster

That's gotta make the new guy feel right at home, huh?

So although they can't be near each other geographically, at least they get to be near each other on this blog. BDPE-Bringing friends together since 2007.

Panel Requests Common Kurd-esy for Abdullah Ocalan

We would imagine that nine years of confinement could do some crazy things to a man. Man, could he turn crazy.

The anti-torture committee of the Council of Europe said in a report Thursday that Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan, in solitary confinement in Turkey for almost nine years, should be allowed human contact or else his mental state will deteriorate further. The report released in Strasbourg said that a psychiatric examination of the 59-year-old showed a distinct deterioration of his mental state since visits in 2001 and 2003.

"This deterioration is connected with a situation of chronic stress and prolonged social and emotional isolation, coupled with a feeling of abandonment and disappointment," according to the report. Ocalan should be allowed regular contact with relatives, the report said, adding that he is in physically good condition.
Seeing relatives might put Ocalan in a better mood. His relatives are looking out for him during this troubled time.

Birthday Backlog

Looks like this guy should stay far away from fireworks show. That should be relatively easy for him, being that he's dead and all.

OK, I know we've been very late with the birthdays this week. There's no real excuse, except for I was distraught over the Patrick Swayze news. I always loved "Too Wong Foo."

Sunday was somebody's Birthday! Whose Birthday? Academy Award Winning Actress Jennifer Jones' Birthday. How Old Is She? 1,2,3,4... 89! And Never been Kissed By... Death

Jennifer Jones' name appears on "Remains to Be Seen's" roster

  • Jones was born as Phylis Lee Isely. She was given the stage name of Jennifer Jones by Hollywood producer David O. Selznick.
Probably a good move. Who was the last Phylis that was attractive enough to appear in movies?

Sunday was somebody else's Birthday! Whose Birthday? Best-Selling Author Tom Wolfe's Birthday. How Old Is He? 1,2,3,4... 78! And Never been Kissed By... Death

Tom Wolfe's name appears on "Extended Weekend at Bernie's'" roster
  • Asked to comment by the Wall Street Journal on blogs in 2007, to mark the tenth anniversary of their advent, Wolfe wrote that "the universe of blogs is a universe of rumors," and that "blogs are an advance guard to the rear."
We here at BDPE take offense to that. Has Mr. Wolfe seen himself reported as dead on the blog? I rest my case.

Sunday was somebody else's else's Birthday! Whose Birthday? President of Algeria Abdelaziz Bouteflika's Birthday. How Old Is He? 1,2,3,4... 71! And Never been Kissed By... Death

Abdelaziz Bouteflika's name appears on "Last Call's" roster

No Recurrence of Cancer in Bobby Murcer's Clubhouse

It's been a week since we reported about Bobby Murcer's latest health scare. Let's check in to see how it all turned out:

Bobby Murcer, the former Yankee and current YES announcer, learned yesterday morning that a recent MRI image that had concerned doctors turned out to be scar tissue, not a recurrence of cancer.

"We received great news this morning," he said in a statement issued by YES. "The biopsy revealed scar tissue. It showed no signs of cancer. We are very excited about this news. It's what we had hoped for all along."
Murcer hopes to be ready for broadcasting duties on Opening Day at the end of the month. This recent scare strikes us more as a balk than a free pass.

Jo Stafford Still Stayin' Alive After All These Years

See what happens when you enter a semi-retirement in 1966? People begin to wonder where you are 42 years later. More specifically, if you've still living above ground.

Q: Is Jo Stafford who sang with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra still alive? If so, is there an address at which I can write her? — H.P., Pinehurst

A: Stafford, who’s 90, is in “somewhat declining health,” according to her son, Tim Weston. But she’s comfortable and resting at home, he said in an e-mail. You can write to her in care of Corinthian Records, P.O. Box 6296, Beverly Hills, CA 90212. Stafford and the singing group the Pied Pipers, of which she was a member, sang with Dorsey’s orchestra from 1939 to 1942.
In 1977, Stafford and Paul Weston released a cover of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." She has on her own since Weston's death 12 years ago.

Free as a Byrd No Longer, Robert Back in Hospital

Check out this bird's reaction. Tall and limber. Now compare that to this Byrd's reaction. Frail as can be.

Sen. Robert C. Byrd, the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, is back in a hospital for tests after a reaction to antibiotics. Spokesman Jesse Jacobs says doctors want to run tests to determine which medicine is best to treat Byrd for his reaction to drugs taken for a urinary tract infection. His stay is expected to be brief.
After a fall at his home last week, you'll recall, Byrd had a stay at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. No Birds were harmed in the making of this post. (We hope.)

Senator David Built and Dies Ford Tough

State Sen. David Ford died this morning at age 59 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

"Words cannot take away the sense of loss his family and friends are feeling at this hour, but it is important that they know he and they are in our hearts and minds," said Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne.

Republican Rep. Jeff Espich of Uniondale, who was a close friend of Ford's and visited him often after he became ill, said he was heartsick about the death. He said Ford was a good, honest man whose Senate colleagues called him "the road warrior because he was always out on the road doing town meetings and visiting constituents."
Ford focused on how technology could improve education and government operations. He wrote about these issues on his blog. We're proud to have been in the same technological network as Ford.
